Smile An offical solution - THIS POST HAS BEEN UPDATED ON 2 SEPTEMBER 2009

Now that Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 2 is available, this has changed. Amongst other new features and functionality,  Microsoft has added a new backup plug-in that makes it possible to create snapshot backups using VSS from Windows Server Backup.

Read an article by Jaap Wesselius that explains the process with SP2

http://www.simple-talk.com/exchange/exchange-articles/exchange-backups-on-windows-server-2008/?utm_source=simpletalkExchange&utm_medium=email&utm_content=ExchangeBackups-20090901&utm_campaign=Exchange

Smile A WORK AROUND THAT WORKS  - THIS POST HAS BEEN UPDATED ON 7 NOVEMEBR 2008

I received a comment from a user TIM on this post on 7th November 2008. His comment is listed below:

As posted on another board, there is a workaround.

Since NTbackup for windows 2003 supported Exchange 2007, it can be copied to Windows 2008 Server and used with Exchanged.

Workaround procedure:

Copy ntbackup.exe, ntmsapi.dll, and vssapi.dll from Windows 2003

into a folder on your Windows 2008 server. Make sure to match x32 or x64 binaries! Once these 3 files are in the same folder, ntbackup.exe will
run just fine on Windows 2008, and even allow the Exchange services to be backed up. Life goes on for Windows admins.

Well I just tested this on my 64Bit 2008 server and my "First Storage Group" had more than 3500 files (log files). As you can see from the screen shot the exchange node does indeed show up in the NT Backup window and it does work. After the backup there was only 16 files in my "First Storage Group" so the logs are truncated properly.

Thanks Tim I am sure there are going to be a lot of happy people out there.

Microsoft - Pity you do not care about your customers!

image

To save people time they can download a zip archive of the 3 files from my server (or just copy from a 32bit or 64 bit server of your own)

Well I thought that I would install Windows Server 2008 and migrate my Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 SP1 at the same time.

The install all went fine and everything is working.

But then I wanted to do a backup:

Microsoft currently does not have a solution at all to backup Windows Server 2008 + Exchange 2007 from Windows Server 2008

Here is a part of a post from the Microsoft Exchange Server Team - http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/03/05/448338.aspx

Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows Server 2008 does not include a backup utility that supports the Exchange ESE streaming backup APIs. The Windows 2008 backup application, Windows Server Backup, cannot be used to take backups of Exchange. NOTE: For customers running the upcoming version of Windows Small Business Server 2008, Windows Server Backup will be able to take Exchange-aware backups.

Exchange still includes the ESE streaming backup APIs, but the absence of an Exchange-aware backup application in Windows may come as a surprise to many. Another change we made that may also affect you is the removal of remote streaming backup support on Windows 2008.

This leaves you with two choices for taking Exchange-aware online backups when running Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows 2008:

  1. Move to a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)-based backup application. You can use Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 or a third-party backup application that supports Exchange-aware VSS-based backups of Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows Server 2008. Windows Server Backup in Windows 2008 is a VSS-based backup application, but there are additional requirements for Exchange backups and restores beyond using the VSS Framework; for example, checking the database and log files for corruption during backups is not part of the VSS Framework and it is not performed by Windows Server Backup.
  2. Use a Third-Party application that supports ESE streaming backups using a local backup agent on the Exchange server. Because the ESE streaming APIs remain in Exchange 2007, you can still use them to backup Exchange. But to do that, you must use a third-party backup application that runs a local agent on the Exchange server so that the streaming backup is made locally, and not remotely. You cannot take remote streaming backups of Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows 2008 with or without a third-party product. Any streaming backups that are performed must be performed locally on the Exchange server. An ESE streaming backup application that uses an "agent" locally on the Exchange server to remotely backup Exchange is considered a local streaming backup and not a remote streaming backup because the application's agent component is running locally on the Exchange server.

So reading this I need to use Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007.  So I downloaded this tool from MSDN Subscriber downloads - 1.8GB of it.

Well this does not even install on Windows Server 2008, so this is not a useable solution unless I run a Windows Server 2003 machine which in my case I do not want to. Let alone learn some monster of a product just so I can do a backup that use to be a checkbox in NTBackup.exe

One has to wonder who approves fundamental changes like this?

  • Buy a new Dell Server $4000
  • Buy Microsoft Windows Server 2008 - $2000
  • Buy Exchange Server 2007 - $3000
  • NO BACKUP FROM MICROSOFT - Priceless

HI Chris

Last week at TechEd North America, Microsoft announced an Exchange-provided, VSS-based plug-in to be provided as a download for Windows Server Backup.

Its currently being built and due to be released later this year

I guess we just run with no Exchange backup in the mean time and keep our fingers crossed.

We ended up purchasing Symantec Backup Exec 12 for Windows as back up software to backup Exchange 2007 SP1 running on Server 2008. It is a bit combersome to configure, but it has been working. (knock on wood)

Backup Exec prefers to backup information store to a disk not to a tape. If you back up information store to a tape, you would need to stage the backup data to a physical disk to perform a granular restore.
Yes, it is a shame that MS does not provide the back up utility for the new exchange....

Have you test the restore? I have BE12 on w2k3 backing up exchange 2007 on server 2008. The backup and restore is fine but no mail were restore even though BE 12 say successful. Am on case with Symantec they are unable to give me a solution.

BE 12 say restore successful. The only message was BE12 created a message in your inbox stating it has restore successful. This is a joke. NO other mails were found. Further check on the mailbox I discover no increase in size nor items other than the mail created by BE12.

Remember, Server 2008/Exchange 2007 are Microsoft's new offerings -- that means that they are actually unfinished beta products. The next iteration of these products will be the 1.0 versions, and the ones after that will be the ones that actually work (sort of).

Just see: Windows NT ---> Server 2000 ---> Server 2003. Which one has the features you really need that actually works right most of the time?

After all, taking the time to make their products work properly the first time would take a few dollars out of Microsoft's already mind-bogglingly bloated corporate wallet, and since they *can* release unfinished junk and are able to succesfully market it, why on earth would they bother to do the job right? Because it's the right thing to do, you say? Ha.

Totally agree.

1. Tested DPM. A stupid product. Didnt know if backup is working or not. I had an error allmost all the time (Replica inconsistent or smth like that)
2. BE12. Few problems:
- after allmost finishing backup on disk: Final error: 0xe000fed1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status.
- MAPI Client and CDO is not even developed for 2008.

In shor: I am angry....

I can't open your zip files, both windows compressed folders and winzip claim that the file is corrupt. I can't seem to find this for download anywhere else. I need the 64 bit version.

Ah, that did the trick. Winrar unpacked a single file, and then I opened that file in winrar, and it worked. Everything Seems to work, except for some reason when I open the schedule jobs tab, the program crashes. Any clues why that would happen? I run the advanced wizard, and it allows me to create a scheduled backup. Do I need to leave the program open? I know in server 2003 it was automatic, but I imagine that server 2008 might not know to run the scheduled backup. How is this working out for you? Do you think this will cover all of your backup needs?

Like so many other people, I'm also very disappointed with the software Microsoft releases these days. The only happy people seem to be the Hollywood executives, who're very happy with the DRM-filled Vista - which isn't even able to function well in large networked enviroments with roaming profiles, or do many of the things which Windows 2000 and XP will let anyone do.

Which responsible executive would put all of their valuable information into a system where even the maker doesn't provide a backup utility? Only the Small Business version of 2008 has the backup built in, leaving everyone else in the dark. Pay more for less?

# re: Windows Server 2008 + Exchange Server 2007 = NO SUPPORTED BACKUP FROM MICROSOFT

I had the same problem with the backup crashing on the scheduler, and it looks like it is because the scheduler automatically tried to run ntbackup.exe from c:\windows\system32 rather than c:\backup where I had saved it and told it to go to. I changed this manually in scheduler, and also set the "start in" directory to be c:\backup, and it worked fine.

Still, it's ludicrous that Microsoft wouldn't include a working basic backup program in its O/S even though it's been doing it since at least DOS version 3.3

Why the hell should we have to go out and buy a third party product (most of which in my experience are rubbish) to do the basics?

Hi

I'm trying the ntbackup workaround but everytime it's run it fails on the VSS with a return value of 0xffff.

Does anyone have same problem?

Well, I updated the Task Scheduler to reflect the correct directory, so now it will actually run when scheduled to do so, however it still crashes when I click on the Schedule Jobs tab in Advanced mode.

Any ideas anyone?

I think that my IIS Server is GZIPing the ZIP file as you request it.

If this happens and you get a single file - just extract it and rename the file with a .ZIP extension

You can then open it - I will need to try to find out why ZIP's are being compressed

I tried this way in my exchange environment (We have Exchange 2007, Windows server 2008, 64-bit), but it didn’t work.!!

I copied the folder, and placed it in mail server.
When I run “ntbackup.exe” … it didn’t show the information store!!

It only showed me the drives of my server!!, and I don’t want to backup the whole drives.

Mmm, do I have to do anything more? any missed step that must be done?
Or shall I placed the folder in specific place??

Thanks for this site... I was like everyone else who dropped their jaw when I realized the built in backup no longer backed up Exchange.

I installed the 64bit binaries and worked great.

I did not have to do anything else but extract the files and a folder and double click the icon... I will work on schedules later.

I at least cleared my 7,000 plus logs that were already created since the install. Thanks again.

I wasn't able to get this to work at first. Then after I tried "run as admin" the information store showed up. Will backup tonight as I'm my heart hasn't beated for 2 days trying to get DPM installed and 3gigs left because logs are taking up. (my last resort was increasing th VHD size of my exchange machine, since I'm running Win08/Ex07 on a VM)

When I tried "Run as Administrator", it worked fine and I saw the Information Store.

Then, I took a backup of a test database (one database in single storage group.
However, the transaction Logs remained the same!! I mean no Logs deleted!!

What shall I do excatly to backup and restore my database?

Any help please ???

Plug-in comes in Exchange 2007 SP2.
See: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/05/11/451281.aspx

"Exchange Volume Snapshot Backup Functionality - A new backup plug-in has been added to the product that will enable customers to create Exchange backups when a backup is invoked through the Windows Server 2008 Backup tool. Exchange Server 2007 didn't have this capability on Windows Server 2008 and additional solutions were required to perform this task."
